About

The Harper Beall Williams Memorial Fund was founded in January 2005 in honor of the late Harper Beall Williams of Wilmington, North Carolina. The Memorial Fund provides financial assistance to undergraduate individuals attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and each candidate must embody Harper’s outstanding leadership and moral character qualities. The scholarship is administered through the UNC-Chapel Hill Office of Scholarships & Student Aid.

Harper Beall Williams tragically passed away December 29, 2004 as a result of a car accident in Wilmington, N.C. He was at home for Christmas break after finishing the first semester of his freshman year at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Among Harper’s loves were God, his family, friends and the Tarheels. He was extremely active in the community during high school and a positive role model for everyone. In addition to being an Eagle Scout, Senior Class Vice President at New Hanover High School and a member of the National Honor Society, Harper was active in Wilmington’s First Presbyterian church youth group, a Young Life leader, participant in Happening and an avid outdoorsman.

UNC has always been a family tradition for the Williams and Harper was no exception. Not only did Harper’s grandfather and parents attend UNC-Chapel Hill, Harper’s brother and sister attended Chapel Hill as well. Additionally, Harper followed in his father and brother’s footsteps by joining the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta.

While the Memorial Fund was initially created by the Williams family, it has been Harper’s extensive group of family, friends and community that have helped the scholarship continue to grow. Through private donations, fundraisers, and the sale of bracelets, t-shirts, and bumper stickers, we have managed to raise over $125,000 to date.
